Christmas Lights on Your Roof Without Damage: A New Jersey Roofer's Guide to Shingles, Gutters and Peaks

-By R&E Roofing-14 min read

The Short Answer

  • Clips only. Never a staple, nail, screw or hot glue. Every hole is a path for water, and it stays after the lights come down.
  • Shingles: an all-in-one or shingle-tab clip under the tab, on a mild afternoon only. Cold shingles crack.
  • Gutters: a clip that hooks over the gutter lip. Lights point straight out.
  • Ridge or peak: a ridge clip, placed from a ladder, pole or lift. Do not walk the ridge.
  • Metal roof: a magnetic C9 clip. Flat roof: a parapet clip. Nothing through the membrane.
  • No gutters: clip the drip edge, or use adhesive strips on the vertical face.
  • The roofer's part: what staples and lifted tabs look like in March is in section 10.

R&E Roofing repairs roofs and gutters in Essex County. We do not hang Christmas lights.

A roof that was fine in October can leak along the eave by spring. Often nothing changed but a cold weekend in late November with a staple gun, and a string of lights yanked down in January. This guide is how to hang lights in Orange, West Orange, Montclair, Bloomfield and the rest of Essex County without leaving that damage behind.

This is the roofer's version of the question: which clip belongs where, why cold matters, what bad hanging looks like in spring, and when the fix is a roof repair.

Which Clip for Which Surface

The right clip is the one made for the edge you have. Christmas Lights Etc, a light retailer, opens its clip guide with: put away your staple guns, hammers and hot glue. IKO, a shingle maker, says never poke a hole in your shingles or any other part of the roof, no matter how small.

The two sources disagree on one thing. Christmas Lights Etc sells clips that tuck under the shingle. IKO recommends avoiding them, because lifting a shingle is not worth the risk. Our view: a shingle-tab clip is fine on a warm, sealed roof and a bad idea on a cold one.

Asphalt Shingles, and Why Cold Matters

Most Essex County roofs are asphalt shingle. Each shingle is nailed to the deck and glued to the one below by a sealant strip the sun softens. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) says shingles adhere to each other for wind resistance, and sealed shingles can be separated by hand for a repair. A shingle-tab light clip slides into that same joint. Christmas Lights Etc's instructions: slide the bulb socket into the ring, then slide the tab under the shingle, where a folding tab holds it.

The temperature problem

No light retailer mentions this part. IKO's cold-weather guidance for roofers says standard asphalt shingles become brittle and prone to breakage as temperatures approach freezing. Below 50°F, roofing materials start to perform differently. The sealant strip is heat-activated by the sun.

NOAA's normals for Newark (1991-2020) put the November average low at 39.0°F and the average high at 54.9°F. December drops to a 31.2°F low and a 44.8°F high. So a Saturday morning after Thanksgiving is often cold enough for a lifted tab to crack instead of flex. A broken sealant strip will not re-glue itself until the sun is strong again in spring.

  • Pick a mild afternoon. A sunny early-November day in the 50s is the window.
  • Slide, never pry. If the tab resists light finger pressure, switch to a gutter or drip-edge clip.
  • Never lift the tab to look. That is how the sealant bond breaks.
  • Old, curled or bare shingles: do not clip them. Use the gutter.
  • No clips in valleys, at chimneys or around vents. Nothing goes under or through flashing for a light display.

Gutters

The gutter lip is the easiest and safest place to hang lights. Christmas Lights Etc says to slide the all-in-one clip over the lip with the flat tab against the back of the gutter. The bulbs face straight out. Plain gutter hooks work for every light type, on gutters only.

What goes wrong on gutters is weight and pulling, not the clip. IKO says holes in gutters leak and holes in the fascia can rot it, so screws and nails are out. The other failure is the takedown: pulling on the string may pull down your gutters, IKO warns.

  • Clean the gutter first. Wet leaves hide the lip and add weight. Our gutter cleaning guide puts the fall cleaning in late November, which is also light-hanging weekend.
  • Check the hangers. A gutter already pulling off the fascia should not carry lights and a January ice load. That is a gutter repair first.
  • Keep cords out of the trough. A cord in the gutter dams water and freezes in.
  • Gutter guards: if a clip will not seat over the guard, use the drip edge above it instead of forcing it.

Ridge, Peak and High Roofs

IKO describes roof peak clips that perch on the peak and grip the shingle edge. Professional installers use them most, because getting close to the peak is hard. Most homeowners should stop at the eave; IKO's first styling tip is a single row of lights. If you do want the peak, reach it from a ladder, a light-hanging pole or a lift. IKO says never to stand or walk on the roof.

  • Treat ridge caps gently. They are bent over the peak and face wind from both sides. A clip that pries one up breaks the seal on one of the most exposed shingles on the house.
  • Never clip a ridge vent. The slot is there to let air out of the attic; keep clips, cords and ice out of it.
  • Walking the ridge in winter means frost, brittle caps and nothing to stop a slide. Skip it.

Metal and Flat Roofs

Metal roofs and trim. Christmas Lights Etc lists a magnetic C9 clip for any metal that holds a magnet, set upright or horizontal. Steel takes a magnet; aluminum and copper do not. Test one clip before buying a box. Never drill a panel for lights.

Flat roofs. Many Newark, East Orange and Irvington homes have a flat roof with a parapet or metal edge. Christmas Lights Etc lists a parapet clip, used with the shingle tab, for flat surfaces. Nothing goes through the membrane or the edge metal, and nobody walks a frosted rubber roof. A puncture in a flat roof shows up weeks later as a ceiling stain. Our flat roof leak repair guide covers what that looks like.

Hanging Lights Without Gutters

Gable ends, porch roofs and many older Orange and Bloomfield houses have no gutter on part of the roof. IKO says to attach the clips to the drip edge or the shingle there, without lifting the shingle enough to break the sealant bond, and never puncturing the shingles or siding. Adhesive strips on the vertical face are IKO's other option.

  • Drip edge first. It is the metal strip under the first course of shingles. A bulb clip grips it like a gutter lip, and it cannot crack.
  • No drip edge? Then it is the shingle tab on a mild day or adhesive strips on the fascia. Our drip edge guide explains why that strip belongs on the roof anyway.
  • Rake edges (the sloped gable edge) are open to the wind on two sides. Clip every bulb, not every other one.

C9, Mini or Icicle, and Which Way the Bulbs Point

IKO says the lights should be rated for outdoor use and tested by ETL, UL or CSA. After that it is look, power and clips.

  • C7 and C9 bulbs are the classic roofline look. Bulb clips force every bulb to point the same way.
  • Icicle lights hang from the gutter lip on a line clip or gutter hook. Check the drop length against doors and windows.
  • Mini lights are subtle on a roofline and need the small socket opening on an OMNI or all-in-one plus clip.
  • Incandescent vs LED. IKO puts incandescent at three to six strands per outlet, and LED at as many as 25, depending on the home. Incandescent bulbs run hot, so leave them off until they are hung.

Do C9 bulbs point up or down?

There is no rule. The clip and the surface decide. Christmas Lights Etc says the all-in-one clip hangs bulbs vertically on shingles and straight out on a gutter. IKO says to choose up, down or out before you buy the clips. The roof cares about two things: the clip holds the gutter lip or drip edge, and every bulb points the same way so no socket rubs the shingle.

Keeping Lights From Blowing Off

A string that flaps in a nor'easter is the one that gets stapled down the next morning. The fix is more clips, not more holes. IKO says to keep clips close enough that the line stays taut and straight, especially with icicle lights. Clips that grip the bulb are harder to take down but more secure in wind.

  • A clip on every bulb on the side of the house that takes the wind.
  • Clip the line, not just the bulb, on icicle and mini strings.
  • Keep the run short. A long loose string is a sail.
  • Tape cords to the ground, so a cord cannot tug the string from below.
  • Lights that blew off once went up on a bad clip or a cold shingle. Re-hang them on the gutter lip, not with a nail.

Ladders, Outlets and the Numbers

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) counts about 160 Christmas decorating-related injuries each day during the holiday season. Nearly half involve falls. In the 2023 holiday season (November 1, 2022 to January 31, 2023), about 14,900 people were treated in emergency rooms for decorating injuries. That is a lot of people coming off ladders.

The ladder rules, from OSHA's portable ladder card

  1. Look for overhead power lines first. Keep a metal ladder away from them.
  2. Inspect the ladder. A damaged ladder comes out of service.
  3. Keep three points of contact: two hands and a foot, or two feet and a hand. Face the ladder.
  4. Set it on a stable, level surface, or secure it top or bottom. Never on boxes or barrels.
  5. Use the four-to-one angle: the base a quarter of the working length out from the wall.
  6. An extension ladder must reach at least 3 feet above the point of support. Do not stand on the top three rungs.
  7. Never move a ladder while someone is on it.

IKO adds the rules for lights. Always have an assistant. Never hang lights with snow or ice on the ground or roof, or in wet weather. Clip with one hand so the other stays on the ladder. Add strings only when you are back on the ground. Never stand or walk on the roof. IKO describes a light-hanging pole that hooks the clip over the gutter from the ground, so a single-story eave may need no ladder at all.

Outlets and fire

CPSC's rule: never string together more than three sets of incandescent lights, and never overload outlets. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports an estimated average of 835 home fires a year that began with decorations other than Christmas trees, causing an average of 3 deaths, 29 injuries and $18 million in property damage a year. Electrical distribution or lighting equipment was involved in 40% of home Christmas tree fires, and 24% were started by lamps or bulbs.

What Hanging Lights Wrong Does to a Roof

None of this damage shows in December. It shows in March, when the snow melts and the first warm rain finds the holes. Here is what that damage looks like and what each one means.

  • A line of staple holes along the eave. Each one goes through the shingle into the deck, right where ice dams hold standing water in February. The fix is to replace the first course or two, not to caulk fifty holes.
  • Lifted or cracked shingle tabs. A tab pried up on a cold day cracks at the bend or breaks its sealant strip. ARMA lists resealing and replacing damaged shingles among the quick repairs an asphalt roof allows.
  • A ridge cap that will not lie flat. Pried in cold or walked on, caps sit lifted on the windiest line of the roof until a gust takes them.
  • Bent gutter lips and pulled hangers. From the January yank. A gutter pulling off the fascia is a gutter repair before the spring rains.
  • Screw holes in the drip edge or fascia. IKO notes holes in the fascia may cause it to rot.
  • Torn or lifted flashing at a porch roof, dormer or chimney where someone nailed into the wrong metal. Our flashing repair guide covers it.
  • Punctures in a flat roof membrane from a stake, a screw or a sharp clip. Water spreads under the membrane before it finds the ceiling.

The spring check, from the ground

  1. With binoculars, look along every eave where lights hung for tabs that sit up or look curled.
  2. Look at the ridge for caps that are lifted or missing.
  3. Sight down each gutter for a bent lip, a sag or a pulled hanger.
  4. Check the fascia under the lights for holes or dark streaks.
  5. Inside, watch the ceilings under the eave through the March thaw.

Anything on that list that is more than a mark is a repair. A small one in April becomes a big one in October. Our spring roof inspection checklist covers the rest of the roof, and the roof inspection page explains what we check when you would rather not climb.

Taking Them Down in January

More roof damage happens at takedown than at hanging. It is colder, it is a chore, and the string looks like it will come off with one pull. IKO is blunt: do not just pull on the string; it may pull down your gutters and damage your shingle roof. Take the lights down one clip at a time.

  • Wait for a thaw. Newark's normal January high is 40.0°F and the low is 25.5°F (NOAA). Clips frozen into a gutter lip snap. Pick an afternoon above 40°F.
  • Unclip from the ladder, with three points of contact and someone at the base.
  • Ice on the gutter lip means the lights stay up another week. Do not chip it.
  • Leaving them up fades the strings in the sun, IKO says, and a clip under a shingle all summer is a wedge against the sealant through every storm.

When to Call a Roofer Instead

R&E Roofing does not hang lights. Call us when the roof is the question, not the display.

  • Before you climb, if the roof is old, has curled shingles, a sagging gutter or a loose ridge. A roof inspection tells you whether the eave can take clips at all.
  • After the lights come down, if the spring check finds a lifted tab, a crack, a bent gutter or a staple line. That is a roof repair.
  • If water shows up inside under an eave where lights hung, or a cap blows off in a January storm. We take emergency calls on nights and weekends.
  • If the gutter is the problem, see gutter repair and cleaning.

Send a photo of the eave or the ceiling stain through the estimate form on the roof repair page, with the town and what you saw, or call the office.

Questions Homeowners Ask About Christmas Lights on the Roof

How do you attach Christmas lights to your roof?

With plastic light clips, never with staples, nails, screws or hot glue. Clips hook over the gutter lip, grip the drip edge, slide under a shingle tab, or perch on the ridge. IKO, a shingle maker, says never to poke a hole in your shingles or any other part of the roof. Even small holes can create leaks.

Should C9 bulbs point up or down?

There is no rule. The clip decides, and every bulb must point the same way. Christmas Lights Etc says an all-in-one clip hangs bulbs vertically under a shingle and straight out on a gutter lip. IKO says to decide up, down or out before you buy clips. The roof does not care about the direction. It cares that nothing lifts a shingle.

What are the best Christmas lights to use on my roofline?

Lights rated for outdoor use and tested by ETL, UL or CSA, according to IKO. C7 and C9 bulbs give the classic roofline look on bulb clips. Icicle and mini lights hang from line clips or gutter hooks. IKO puts incandescent strings at three to six strands per outlet. CPSC says never to connect more than three sets of incandescent lights.

How do you keep icicle lights from blowing off the roof?

More clips, closer together, and clip the line as well as the bulbs. IKO says to keep clips close enough that the line stays taut and straight, which matters most with icicle lights. Clips that grip the bulb are harder to remove but more secure in wind. Never add a nail or a staple to stop lights moving. Add a clip.

How do you hang Christmas lights on high peaks?

With ridge clips placed from a ladder, a light-hanging pole or a lift, never by walking the ridge. IKO describes roof peak clips that grip the shingle edge at the peak and says professionals use them because the peak is hard to reach. IKO's rule is never to stand or walk on the roof. A bucket lift is sometimes the only safe way up a steep roof.

Can I hang Christmas lights without gutters?

Yes. IKO says to attach the clips to the drip edge or the shingle on edges without gutters. Do not lift the shingle enough to break the sealant bond to the shingle below, and never puncture the shingle or siding. The drip edge is the metal strip under the first course of shingles. Most bulb clips grip it like a gutter lip. Adhesive strips on the vertical face are IKO's other option.

What are the best C9 clips for Christmas lights?

For most Essex County roofs, an all-in-one clip or a C9 circle clip on the gutter lip. Christmas Lights Etc's chart lists both for gutters and shingles, the original shingle tab for shingles only, a magnetic C9 clip for metal, and a parapet clip for flat surfaces. As roofers we prefer any clip that holds the gutter lip or drip edge over one wedged under a shingle.

Can I use staples or nails to hang Christmas lights on the roof?

No. Every hole through a shingle, drip edge, gutter or fascia board is a path for water. IKO says small holes in shingles can create leaks, holes in gutters leak, and holes in the fascia can rot it. The holes stay after the lights come down, and a leak that starts in spring often traces back to a row of them along the eave.

Is it safe to hang Christmas lights on a cold day?

Hang them on a mild, dry afternoon. IKO's cold-weather guidance says standard asphalt shingles become brittle and prone to breakage as temperatures approach freezing. Newark's normal November low is 39.0°F and the December low is 31.2°F (NOAA 1991-2020). A late-November morning can be cold enough for a lifted tab to crack instead of bend. IKO also says never to hang lights when snow or ice is visible, or in wet weather.
