Copper Gutters Cost in New Jersey (2026): Price per Foot, Half-Round, Downspouts and Installation

-By R&E Roofing-14 min read

The Short Answer

  • Per foot, installed: $15 to $40 according to HomeGuide (November 2025), $25 to $40 according to Fixr (January 2025) and $20 to $40 according to This Old House (May 2026).
  • A typical house (150 feet): $2,200 to $6,000 (HomeGuide). Fixr's national average job is $4,500 for 150 feet of half-round copper.
  • Nearest New Jersey figure: $15 to $30 a foot in Jersey City (Homeyou, October 2026).
  • Half-round vs K-style: $27 to $40 a foot vs $26 to $37 installed (Fixr). HomeGuide says half-round is common on historic homes.
  • Downspouts: $11 to $30 a foot for the copper itself (HomeGuide), one for every 30 to 40 feet of gutter.
  • Permit in New Jersey: not needed for the gutters and leaders themselves (N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7).

Every price on this page is a published figure quoted from the named source with its date. None of them is R&E Roofing's price. R&E gives a written, itemized estimate after looking at the house.

Copper gutters cost $15 to $40 per linear foot installed, or about $2,200 to $6,000 for the 150 feet on a typical house, according to HomeGuide. That is more than three times HomeGuide's price for aluminum. In return, HomeGuide says copper lasts 50 to 100 years.

This guide puts the published prices in one place. It covers price per foot and per house, half-round vs K-style, downspouts, seamless vs soldered seams, copper weight, and what New Jersey requires. For every gutter material side by side, see our gutter installation cost guide for New Jersey. If you already know you want copper, our gutter installation page explains how a job runs.

Copper Gutter Cost per Foot

Copper is priced by the linear foot, measured along the roof edges that get gutters. Four of the five sources below put the top of a standard job at $30 to $40 a foot. They disagree more on the low end. The only New Jersey figure we found is Homeyou's for Jersey City.

Copper gutter cost per linear foot installed, as published by each source. None is an R&E Roofing price.Swipe the table sideways to see every column.

Source and datePer foot installedWhat it covers
HomeGuide (Nov 7, 2025)$15 to $40Includes downspouts, hangers and labor. Sectional $15 to $30, seamless $30 to $50.
Fixr (Jan 31, 2025)$25 to $40K-style $26 to $37, half-round $27 to $40, installed.
This Old House (May 22, 2026)$20 to $40Installed.
Homeyou, Jersey City, NJ (Oct 3, 2026)$15 to $30Installation. Labor alone $3 to $5 a foot.
Golini Roofing, Massachusetts (Aug 2025)$20 to $60Installed, from internet data. $25 to $80+ combining materials and labor.

Why the ranges differ

  • Seams. HomeGuide prices soldered sectional copper at $15 to $30 a foot and seamless at $30 to $50.
  • Style. Half-round costs a little more than K-style in both HomeGuide's and Fixr's tables.
  • Weight of the copper. HomeGuide's 20-ounce prices run higher than its 16-ounce prices at every size.
  • What is included. HomeGuide's figure includes downspouts and hangers. Golini Roofing's $25 to $80+ is its materials-and-labor total.
  • Custom profiles. Matching an old ogee profile can be far above these ranges. See the forum example below.

Golini Roofing's page, Google's first result for "copper gutters cost" in Essex County on October 29, 2026, says its $20 to $60 figure comes from average internet data, not its own prices. Homeyou's Jersey City page also shows a calculator total of $4 to $6 a foot for a generic "metal gutter". That line matches the $4 to $8 aluminum price on the same page, so use its $15 to $30 copper line.

What 100, 150 and 200 Feet of Copper Gutter Cost

HomeGuide says most homes have 100 to 200 linear feet of gutters. Fixr adds that some smaller homes need as little as 50 feet. Here are both sources' installed totals by length.

200 feet$3,000 to $8,000$5,000 to $8,000
250 feet$3,700 to $10,000$6,250 to $10,000
300 feet$4,500 to $12,000Not given

By number of stories, Fixr puts a one-story house at $1,250 to $5,000, two stories at $2,500 to $8,000 and three stories at $3,500 to $10,880. Taller houses need longer downspouts and more ladder and safety work.

HomeGuide's per-foot price already includes downspouts, hangers and labor. The downspout count uses HomeGuide's rule of one downspout for every 30 to 40 feet of gutter. Custom profiles such as ogee or box gutters, rotted fascia, second and third stories, and heavier 20-ounce copper all cost more.

Half-Round vs K-Style Copper Gutters

HomeGuide says these are the two most common copper styles. K-style has a flat back and a decorative front, which Fixr compares to crown molding. Half-round looks like a tube cut in half lengthwise. HomeGuide calls K-style the most popular style for modern homes and half-round common on historic homes.

Half-round gutter$9 to $19$27 to $40Common on historic homes (HomeGuide)
Downspouts$11 to $30Included in the per-foot totalsRound, square, corrugated or decorative (HomeGuide)
  • Half-round gives the classic, traditional look that Golini Roofing calls perfect for historic homes. Fixr says it does a better job of keeping water moving so it does not settle in the gutter.
  • K-style has a flat back that Golini Roofing says makes installation easier, and a shape that holds more water. Fixr says it costs slightly less.
  • Other shapes include high-back, fascia and Victorian ogee gutters (HomeGuide). Matching an old profile can cost far more, as the example below shows.

A real custom-profile quote

In a 2023 Ask MetaFilter thread, a Massachusetts owner of a 1912 house described a quote of about $34,000 for 225 feet of 5-inch copper made to match an original ogee profile. That works out to about $150 a foot, with every seam soldered. The same contractor quoted about $5,000 less for half-round. It is one homeowner's quote, not an average. It shows why matching an old profile on a historic house can cost several times the national range.

Copper Downspouts, Hangers and Parts

HomeGuide prices copper gutter and downspout material together at $12 to $30 per linear foot. Its style table puts downspouts alone at $11 to $30 a foot, and its text at $14 to $34. Most downspouts are 3 to 6 inches wide. A gutter system needs one downspout for every 30 to 40 feet of gutter.

The parts a copper system needs, beyond the gutter itself:

  • Hangers and fasteners in a compatible metal. HomeGuide says all hangers, fasteners, end caps, braces and brackets must be copper, bronze, brass or stainless steel. Aluminum hangers react with the copper and break it down.
  • Downspouts in round, square, corrugated or decorative shapes (HomeGuide).
  • End caps, miters and elbows, which Golini Roofing notes need skilled soldering.
  • Gutter guards, if you want them. HomeGuide puts copper gutter guards at $19 to $27 a foot installed. Our gutter guard cost guide covers other guard types.

The decorative box at the top of the downspout in the photo at the top of this page is a leader head. None of the sources we read publishes a price for one, so ask for it as its own line on the quote.

Copper gutters are on the list of what R&E Roofing's gutter installation includes. Call, or send the town, the rough length of gutter and the style you want.

Soldered Seams or Seamless Copper

Sectional copper comes in pre-cut lengths that are soldered together on the house. Seamless copper is formed on site by a machine into one continuous piece for each side of the roof. HomeGuide and Fixr agree that seamless costs more. They disagree on how much more.

Sectional vs seamless copper gutters, installed price per footSwipe the table sideways to see every column.

TypeHomeGuide (Nov 2025)Fixr (Jan 2025)
Sectional (seamed, soldered)$15 to $30$25 to $34
Seamless (formed on site)$30 to $50$29 to $40
  • Sectional: cheaper to install, but HomeGuide says the seams are more prone to blockages and leaks.
  • Seamless: fewer joints and less maintenance, but more labor (HomeGuide). Fixr calls it slightly more durable and trickier to install.
  • The typical job: Fixr's national average is $4,500 for 150 feet of half-round seamed copper.

16-Ounce or 20-Ounce Copper

Copper gutter thickness is measured in ounces per square foot. HomeGuide says gutters usually come in 16 or 20 ounces, which is 0.022 to 0.027 inch thick. Finished copper gutters weigh 0.80 to 1.50 pounds per foot. Golini Roofing calls 16-ounce the industry standard and recommends 20-ounce where snow is heavy.

Newark averages 31.5 inches of snow a year (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). Snow and ice sitting in a gutter add weight, so ask which weight a quote uses and how far apart the hangers are. HomeGuide says the right width depends on local rainfall, house size and roof design.

What Pushes the Price Up

These are the cost factors HomeGuide lists for copper, with its published prices where it gives one.

  • Taking down the old gutters: $1 to $2 a foot, or $150 to $300 on average. HomeGuide says most contractors include it in labor.
  • Stories: two- and three-story houses need longer downspouts and extra safety measures.
  • Corners and gables: roofs with many corners, gables and pitches cost more in material and labor.
  • Wider gutters: HomeGuide says up to 8-inch gutters on large homes can cost up to twice as much in labor.
  • Rotted fascia or soffit: $4 to $22 a foot to replace, or $9 to $34 a foot for the whole eave. See our soffit and fascia replacement cost guide.
  • Drip edge: $1.50 to $3.50 a foot installed.
  • Finish: a solution that speeds up the green patina, or a clear sealant that keeps it bright, costs extra.
  • Time of year: HomeGuide says installation is typically cheaper in the winter months.

Do Copper Gutters Turn Green?

Yes. HomeGuide says copper oxidizes and turns green after 5 to 20 years, faster in cool, wet climates. Golini Roofing describes the order: a warm brown within months to a couple of years, then the blue-green called verdigris over 5 to 20 years. The patina is a protective layer, not rot.

To keep copper bright instead, HomeGuide lists these options:

  • Polishing off the tarnish often ($5 to $15 a bottle, plus labor)
  • A UV-resistant or antioxidant coating
  • Copper coated in tin-zinc
  • A clear-coat protective finish

If you want the color without the cost, HomeGuide prices copper-penny aluminum, which is aluminum painted to look like copper, at $3 to $6 a foot for materials. It never turns green and lasts 20 to 30 years.

Copper or Aluminum? What You Pay Over the Years

HomeGuide puts aluminum gutters at $4 to $12 a foot installed, lasting 20 to 30 years. Copper is $15 to $40 a foot and lasts 50 to 100 years. On 150 feet, that is $600 to $1,800 for aluminum against $2,250 to $6,000 for copper at HomeGuide's per-foot prices. Over copper's life, aluminum would be put up two to five times.

Reasons to choose copper

  • It lasts 50 to 100 years (HomeGuide).
  • It resists corrosion and rust.
  • It ages into a blue-green patina.
  • HomeGuide says it resists leaks better than other gutter materials.
  • HomeGuide says historic homes often have copper gutters.

Reasons to think twice

  • The upfront cost, more than three times aluminum.
  • It needs installers who work in copper (HomeGuide).
  • HomeGuide notes copper gutters are often stolen for scrap.
  • Some homeowners associations do not allow it.
  • It corrodes if hung with the wrong metal parts, such as aluminum or galvanized steel (HomeGuide).
  • Keeping it shiny takes regular polishing.

Copper Gutters in New Jersey: Permits, Rain and Historic Homes

  • No permit for the gutters. New Jersey's Uniform Construction Code lists "the repair, replacement, or installation of exterior gutters and leaders" as ordinary maintenance. Ordinary maintenance can be done without a permit application or notice to the construction official (N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7).
  • Drain lines are different. The same rule says changing drainage piping is not ordinary maintenance. If downspouts will be tied into an underground drain, ask your town's construction office.
  • Rain. Newark averages 46.6 inches of precipitation a year, rain and melted snow together (NOAA 1991-2020 normals). That is the water the gutters carry.
  • Historic districts. A local historic district can have its own review. Our guide to historic home roofing in Essex County and our Llewellyn Park roof guide cover how those reviews work.

If your gutters already leak, our gutter repair page covers fixing what is there before you replace it.

What to Ask Before You Sign

Copper quotes vary more than aluminum quotes, so compare them line by line. Ask each contractor:

  1. How many linear feet of gutter and downspout is this?
  2. Half-round, K-style or a custom profile, and what width?
  3. 16-ounce or 20-ounce copper?
  4. Soldered sections or seamless?
  5. What metal are the hangers, and how far apart?
  6. Is taking down the old gutters included?
  7. Is any rotted fascia priced separately?
  8. Will the copper be left to patina, or sealed?

Before you hire anyone, check the contractor's state registration. Our guide to the New Jersey contractor lookup shows how.

Questions Homeowners Ask About Copper Gutter Cost

How much do copper gutters cost per foot?

HomeGuide puts copper gutters at $15 to $40 per linear foot installed, including downspouts, hangers and labor (November 2025). Fixr puts them at $25 to $40 (January 2025) and This Old House at $20 to $40 (May 2026). The nearest New Jersey figure we found is $15 to $30 per foot in Jersey City (Homeyou, October 2026). None of these is R&E Roofing's price.

How much is 100 linear feet of copper gutters?

HomeGuide puts 100 linear feet of copper gutters at $1,500 to $4,000 installed, and Fixr at $2,500 to $4,000. HomeGuide says most homes have 100 to 200 linear feet of gutters.

How much do copper gutters and downspouts cost?

HomeGuide prices copper gutter and downspout material at $12 to $30 per linear foot, and $15 to $40 per foot installed with labor. Downspout material alone runs $11 to $30 per foot in HomeGuide's style table. For a typical 150-foot house, HomeGuide's installed total is $2,200 to $6,000, downspouts included. Plan on one downspout for every 30 to 40 feet of gutter.

How much do half-round copper gutters cost?

Fixr puts half-round copper gutters at $27 to $40 per linear foot installed, against $26 to $37 for K-style (January 2025). HomeGuide puts the material alone at $9 to $19 per foot for half-round and $9 to $15 for K-style. Fixr's national average job is $4,500 for 150 feet of half-round seamed copper.

Why would you get copper gutters?

For how long they last and how they look. HomeGuide says copper gutters last 50 to 100 years, against 20 to 30 years for aluminum, and that they resist corrosion and age into a blue-green patina. HomeGuide also says historic homes often have copper gutters. The trade-off is the price: HomeGuide's installed range for copper is $15 to $40 a foot, against $4 to $12 for aluminum.

Are copper gutters worth it?

It depends on how long you will keep the house. Over the 50 to 100 years HomeGuide gives copper, aluminum gutters at 20 to 30 years each would be replaced at least once. HomeGuide adds that the return on resale depends on what buyers in your neighborhood expect.

Do copper gutters turn green?

Yes, unless they are polished or sealed. HomeGuide says copper oxidizes and turns green after 5 to 20 years, faster in cool, wet climates. The green patina is a protective layer. Polishing, a UV-resistant coating or a clear coat keeps the bright color for longer.

Do you need a permit to replace gutters in New Jersey?

Not for the gutters themselves. New Jersey's construction code lists the repair, replacement or installation of exterior gutters and leaders as ordinary maintenance, which can be done without a permit application (N.J.A.C. 5:23-2.7). Changing drainage piping, such as tying downspouts into an underground drain, is not ordinary maintenance under the same rule. A house in a local historic district may also need its preservation commission's review, so ask your town first.

How long does it take to install copper gutters?

Homeyou's Jersey City guide says a copper gutter installation usually takes 1 day, and more than a day on a large house. HomeGuide lists longer install times as one of copper's drawbacks.
